Order of British India, 2nd Class 1873, awarded to Subadar Major Robinjee Israel, 8th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry

The Order was instituted in 1837 by the East India Company and awarded to Indian officers for long and faithful service. There were two classes of award. The recipients of the second class were entitled to the title 'Bahadur' (hero) and recipients of the first class were entitled to use the title 'Sardar Bahadur' (heroic leader). The order was highly regarded and was awarded for distinguished service on a particular campaign, but was also presented to officers for between 20 and 30 years service. Subadar Major Robinjee Israel was a Beni-Israeli, a native Indian Jew.
