Battle of Koosh-ab, 1857

Photogravure by Hugh West after the oil painting by Louis William Desanges, 1860s (c).

This shows the 2nd Squadron of the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry breaking the square of the Shah's Guards at the Battle of Koosh-ab, during the Persian War (1856-1857). The painting was originally in the possession of Charles Combe, who participated in the charge, and was annotated by him.

The painting is thought to have been lost in the fire at Combe's family seat, Cobham Park, in the 1870s.
