'United Irishmen in training', 1798
Coloured engraving by James Gillray, published by H Humphrey, 1798.
Volunteers of the Society of United Irishmen, a republican nationalist group fighting for Irish independence, are depicted by Gillray practising their military skills. The print contains several references to Jacobin influence, such as the Liberty Tree pub sign and the phrygian cap, suggesting that the 1798 uprising was a French plot, rather than a genuine struggle for Irish freedom.
