Helmet plate, officer, Corps of Royal Engineers, 1878-1902
This badge was designed for the 1878 pattern home service helmet. The scroll at the bottom of the badge includes the motto of the Corps of Royal Engineers 'Ubique' which means 'Everywhere'. Awarded in 1832, this single word reflects the fact that the unit has been involved in nearly all the British Army's combat deployments and would thus be entitled to myriad battle honours.
The badge is die-struck and gilded which was designed to avoid it having to be polished like the men's brass versions of the same design.
