Service dress peaked forage cap, Auxiliary Territorial Service, 1942 (c)
Khaki barathea cap lined with khaki silk-like fabric. At centre front a brass cap badge showing the pierced letters 'ATS' within a laurel wreath, the whole surmounted by a monarchial crown. Lining stamped: 'M W [arrow] D 789'.
The Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) was established in September 1938. While women were still not allowed to fight, they returned to supporting roles during the Second World War (1939-1945). In July 1941 the ATS was given full military status, meaning its members were no longer volunteers.
