'A plan of Fishguard Bay' 1797
Map published by Laurie and Whittle, 20 March 1797. Captioned, 'near which the French landed 1,200 men, 22 Feb 1797 and surrendered prisoners to Lord Cawdor on the 24th'.
This map features the Battle of Fishguard in February 1797 - the last invasion of mainland Britain. Launched to support a rebellion in Ireland, the French incursion was supposed to have occurred alongside landings in northern England and Ireland, but bad weather cancelled these. After looting settlements and skirmishing with local forces, the French surrendered.
