Indian Medical Service midwifery set, 1850 (c)
This set originally contained seven instruments, but one is missing. Starting from the back of the mahogany box, they are as follows: A cephalotribe, for breaking up the skull of a still-born child and and removing it from the womb; short midwifery forceps, for assisting delivery; a perforator for piercing the skull of a dead child and removing it from the womb; a combined hook and needle for breach delivery and still-birth; a recess for missing scissors and an inset containing a steel catheter for drainage; and a perforating canula for piercing the membrane sac.
