Tiger hunt, 1902

Photograph by Lala Deen Dayal, India, 1902.

Lord Curzon (fifth from left) was the Viceroy of India between 1898 and 1905. During his tenure of office he regularly hunted alongside British officials and soldiers and the Indian princes of the Raj. Some of the great 'Shikar' expeditions lasted for weeks and bagged thousands of birds and animals. By the early 20th century excessive hunting of the Bengal tiger had greatly reduced its population in India.

From an album of 101 photographs by Lala Deen Dayal and Sons, 1902.
