Jama Masjid Mosque, Delhi, 1886
Photograph taken by Lala Deen Dayal (1844-1905).
The Jama Masjid Mosque was built in the mid-seventeenth century during the reign of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (1592-1666). The domed mosque is part of a gated complex built in red sandstone and white marble. After the Indian Mutiny in 1857 the mosque escaped demolition but was occupied by British troops and was closed to Muslim worshipers until 1862.
