Side drum, 1815 (c)
This side drum was carried by the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards at Waterloo in 1815. The regiment suffered heavy losses in the campaign - about 450 officers and men in the 2nd Battalion and nearly 600 in the 3rd. At the climax of the battle the regiment defeated what were believed to be the Grenadiers of the French Imperial Guard. As a reward, it was renamed 'The First or Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards'.
