The 66th Regiment of Native Infantry (or Goorkha Regiment) was the descendant of the 1st Nasiri (or Nusseree) Battalion, which was raised in 1815 from soldiers of the Gurkha Army of Amer Singh Thapa that had been defeated by the British. It was given the designation after the original 66th had mutinied during the 1850s. In 1861 it was re-named the 1st Goorkha Regiment.
