'A Nair', India, 1835 (c)

Gouache on mica by a Company artist, 1835 (c).

The Nair is a Hindu caste centred on Kerala in southern India.

Local rulers, soldiers, domestic servants, tradesmen and their wives were standard subjects in sets of mica paintings showing the different occupations of India.
