Light dragoon pattern shako worn by Cornet Charles Cazenove, 6th Madras Light Cavalry, 1851 (c)

The 6th Cavalry was originally raised in 1799. The British officers of the Madras Army's Light Cavalry regiments wore a distinctive French grey uniform that had been adopted in 1818. The regiment's shakos, tunics and overalls closely followed the British pattern.

Charles Cazenove was born in London on 27 July 1831. He was educated by the Reverend W H Watson in Brighton. He sailed on the SS Indus to India in January 1850, and joined the 6th Madras Light Cavalry as a cornet on 18 April 1850. He resigned from the Army in February 1853. He died in 1903.
