Glengarry badge, other ranks, 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment, 1874-1881

The 53rd Regiment of Foot was raised in 1755 for service in the Seven Years War (1756-1763). It was deployed to North America during the American War of Independence (1775-1783). The regiment also saw extensive service during the Wars of the French Revolution (1792-1802) and the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815). The unit served in India from 1844 to 1860 and then returned to England. In 1881 the regiment was amalgamated with the 85th (King's Light Infantry) Regiment of Foot to form the King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
