Brass badge with regimental numeral, '54', within a garter bearing the regimental title, 'West Norfolk Regiment', surmounted by a sphinx with the battle honour, 'Marabout'.
The 54th Regiment of Foot was raised in 1755. It saw service in North America during the American War of Independence (1775-1783). The sphinx emblem records the Regiment's service in Egypt during the Wars of the French Revolution (1798-1801). Marabout was a fort assaulted by the regiment during the Siege of Alexandria in 1801.
The regiment saw service in India, Burma and Africa. It was amalgamated with the 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot, forming the Dorsetshire Regiment in 1881.
