Mameluke sword presented to Lieutenant General Sir Garnet Wolseley, by His Highness Mehemet Tewfik, Khedive of Egypt, 1882
Although Mameluke-hilted swords were specified for General Officers from 1831 onwards, they also remained a fashionable form for presentation swords. This particular sword, of classic Mameluke style both in blade and hilt, was presented to Sir Garnet Wolseley after the successful Egyptian campaign of 1882. The garnet set in the blade is a symbolisation of his name.
Mehemet Tewfik became Khedive of Egypt in 1879 when his father was deposed.
