Regimental hockey team of the 1st Brahmans, 1912 (c)
Photograph, India, 1912 (c).
Regimental teams usually included at least one British player, but in 1912-1913 the 1st Brahmans fielded this entirely Indian team. In the centre is Subedar Bale (or Bhole) Tewari, an Indian officer who later served in the First World War and achieved some fame as the mentor of Indian hockey star Dhyan Chand.
From album of 26 photographs associated with the 1st Brahmans, later the 4th/1st Punjab Regiment, 1904-1931.
