British and Indian Officers of the 1st Brahmans, 1904 (c)
Photograph, India, 1904 (c).
Until after the First World War, all British Officers out-ranked their Indian counterparts, who had risen through the ranks of the unit. The Indian officers of this unit came from the Brahman (or Brahmin) caste, generally considered the highest in Hindu society.
From an album of 26 photographs associated with the 1st Brahmans, later the 4th/1st Punjab Regiment, 1904-1931.
