Indian Distinguished Service Medal, 1943, awarded to Naik Shamsher Singh, 2nd Battalion, 1st Punjab Regiment
The 2nd Battalion saw service in India and Burma during the war and received more gallantry awards than any other Indian Army battalion. The list included 12 Indian Distinguished Service Medals (IDSM). The IDSM was instituted on 25 June 1907 and awarded to Indians in the armed forces and emergency services for distinguished service.
