Iron shot, reputedly from the Siege of Athlone, Ireland, 1691
Athlone is in central Ireland on the River Shannon. It was an important centre of communications and of great strategic importance to both sides in the Irish War, 1689-1691. The town was held by the Jacobites but was eventually captured by William III's forces on 30 June 1691.
