Lace and fringe sample, drummer, 79th Regiment of Foot (Cameron Highlanders), sealed pattern 1860
White worsted lace 5/8 inches in width, bearing a thistle of brown and black with edges trimmed with yellow. 1.75 inch long fringe of twisted worsted of alternate black, yellow, pale blue and white.
A 'sealed pattern' is a prototype of any item that the British Army issued to soldiers. It provided clothing or equipment suppliers with an example to copy.
The regiment was originally raised as the 79th Regiment of Foot (Cameronian Volunteers) in 1793, becoming the 79th Regiment of Foot (Cameron Highlanders) in 1804. They received royal patronage from Queen Victoria in 1873, becoming the 79th Regiment, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. In 1881 it was redesignated as the 1st Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. In 1961 it was amalgamated with the Seaforth Highlanders to form the Queen's Own Highlanders, which in turn amalgamated with the Gordon Highlanders to form the Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons) in 1994.
