Lace and fringe sample, drummer, 88th Regiment of Foot (Connaught Rangers), sealed pattern, 1860
White worsted lace 5/8 inches in width, bearing a design of large yellow and red diagonal stripes each edged with a black worm of stitched worsted. 1.75 inch long fringe of twisted worsted of yellow and red.
A 'sealed pattern' is a prototype of any item that the British Army issued to soldiers. It provided clothing or equipment suppliers with an example to copy.
Formed in 1793, the regiment amalgamated with the 94th Regiment of Foot in 1881 to form the Connaught Rangers, with the 88th becoming the 1st Battalion of the new regiment. It disbanded in 1922 following the establishment of the independent Irish Free State.
