Lace and fringe sample, drummer, 20th (The East Devonshire) Regiment of Foot, sealed pattern, 1860
White worsted lace 5/8 inches in width, bearing on each edge a red worm and a central worm of black and yellow diagonal stripes.
A 'sealed pattern' is a prototype of any item that the British Army issued to soldiers. It provided clothing or equipment suppliers with an example to copy.
Raised as Peyton's Regiment of Foot in 1688, the unit became the 20th Regiment of Foot in 1751. It was designated the 20th (East Devonshire) Regiment of Foot in 1782. Under the Childers Reforms of 1881, it was renamed The Lancashire Fusiliers before further amalgamations resulted in the formation of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
