Fringe sample, drummer, 50th (Queen's Own) Regiment of Foot, sealed pattern, 1860

Twisted red and white worsted.

A 'sealed pattern' is a prototype of any item that the British Army issued to soldiers. It provided clothing or equipment suppliers with an example to copy.

The regiment was raised in 1755 as the 52nd Regiment of Foot and was renumbered the 50th in 1756. It was affiliated with Kent in 1782, becoming the 50th (West Kent) Regiment of Foot. It was renamed again in 1827 as the 50th (Duke of Clarence's) Regiment of Foot, in honour of the future King William IV and later became the 50th (Queen's Own) Regiment of Foot in 1831, in honour of his wife Queen Adelaide. Under the Childers Reforms of 1881 it amalgamated with the 97th (The Earl of Ulster's) Regiment of Foot to form the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment. In January 1921 the name changed to the Royal West Kent Regiment (Queen's Own) and by April it was known as the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment. In 1961 they amalgamated with the Buffs to form the Queen's Own Buffs, The Royal Kent Regiment. Further amalgamations led to the Queen's Regiment in 1966, which later led to the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment in 1992.
