Lace and fringe sample, drummer, 83rd (County of Dublin) Regiment of Foot, sealed pattern, 1860
White worsted lace 5/8 inches in width, bearing a green worm and a red worm. 1.75 inch fringe of twisted worsted of white, red and green.
A 'sealed pattern' is a prototype of any item that the British Army issued to soldiers. It provided clothing or equipment suppliers with an example to copy.
Raised in Dublin as the 83rd Regiment of Foot in 1793 the regiment was granted the designation, 'County of Dublin', formalising its historic links with the region in 1859. Under the Childers Reforms of 1881, the regiment amalgamated with the 86th (Royal County Down) Regiment of Foot to form the Royal Irish Rifles, renamed the Royal Ulster Rifles in 1921. In 1968 it amalgamated with three other regiments to form the Royal Irish Rangers, which merged with the Ulster Defence Regiment to form the Royal Irish Regiment in 1992.
