Lace and fringe sample, drummer, 97th (Earl of Ulster's) Regiment of Foot, sealed pattern, 1860

White worsted lace 5/8 inches in width with edges trimmed with red, bearing a red, white and blue star design. 1.75 inch long fringe of twisted worsted of alternate pale blue, white and red.

A 'sealed pattern' is a prototype of any item that the British Army issued to soldiers. It provided clothing or equipment suppliers with an example to copy.

The 97th (The Earl of Ulster's) Regiment of Foot was raised in 1824 and in 1881 was amalgamated with the 50th Regiment of Foot to form the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). In 1921 it was renamed the Royal West Kent Regiment (Queen's Own) and was renamed three months later as the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment. In 1961 it amalgamated with the Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment) to form the Queen's Own Buffs, The Royal Kent Regiment. Five years later it merged with other Home Counties regiments, forming the Queen's Regiment, which in turn was amalgamated with the Royal Hampshire Regiment in 1992 to form the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment (Queen's and Royal Hampshires).
