Colonel Reilly in a donga, 1879
Pen and ink sketch by Louis Napoleon, Prince Imperial (1856-1879).
This caricature of Colonel (later Major-General) William Reilly (1827-1886), was drawn by the Prince Imperial while in the tent of Lieutenant- Colonel John North Crealock, Lord Chelmsford's Military Secretary, shortly before the prince was killed in an ambush by Zulus on 1 June 1879. Reilly commanded the Royal Artillery in southern Africa between February and August 1879 during the Zulu War, before joining the Ordnance Department at The War Office.
