A howdah pistol was a large-calibre handgun, often with two or four barrels, used by British officers in India in the mid-19th century when out hunting or exploring. The gun could stop dangerous animals like tigers and buffalo at close range. This example was made by Holland and Holland of New Bond Street, London.
