The 5th (Service) Battalion of the Connaught Rangers was raised on 19 August 1914 at the regimental depot in Galway. Soon after it was allocated to 29th Brigade in 10th (Irish) Division. After preliminary training in Ireland this formation moved to England in May 1915, concentrated in the Basingstoke area and in July embarked at Plymouth for Gallipoli where it served until the end of September.
