Following the outbreak of war, Jourdain raised the 5th (Service) Battalion on 19 August 1914 at the regimental depot in Galway, Ireland. After a period of training in England his battalion went on to serve at Gallipoli and Salonika with 10th (Irish Division) before transferring to the Western Front in 1917.
