Cap badge, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), 1914 (c)
Bi-metal badge with a demi-lion facing dexter, issuing from a ducal coronet and holding a banner, above a scroll bearing the motto, 'Virtutis Fortuna Comes', with a lower scroll bearing the unit title, 'The West Riding'.
The motto of this regiment was 'Virtutis Fortuna Comes' which means 'Fortune is the Companion of Courage'. This was the family motto of the Duke of Wellington, and was inherited from the 33rd Regiment of Foot. Formed in 1881 through the amalgamation of the 33rd and 76th Regiments, the Duke of Wellington's also inherited the 33rd's nickname of 'The Dukes' alongside its affiliation to the West Riding of Yorkshire.
