Cap badge, Dorsetshire Regiment, 1914 (c)
Badge in the form of a castle and scroll with the Regiment's motto, 'Primus in Indis' (First in India), within a wreath, with the inscription, 'Dorsetshirte', surmounted by a sphinx above the battle honour, 'Marabout'.
The Dorsetshire Regiment was formed in 1881 from the amalgamation of the 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot and the 54th (West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot. The motto, 'First in India', references the 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot's deployment to India in 1754 and the castle, its involvement in the Siege of Gibraltar in 1779. The sphinx and battle honour 'Marabout' date back to the 54th (West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot's involvement in the Egyptian campaign during the French Revolutionary Wars (1798-1801). In 1958 the Dorsetshire Regiment merged with the Devonshire Regiment to form the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment.
