Lieutenant Thomas George Southwell, Coldstream Guards, 1739

Full-length portrait of Southwell holding a spontoon with a house and landscape in the distance behind. Sir Thomas George Southwell (1721-1780) joined the Coldstream Guards in 1738. He was MP for Enniscorthy in Ireland, between 1747 and 1760 and Constable of Limerick Castle between 1749 and 1780. Southwell was MP for County Limerick (1761-1766) and Governor of Limerick (1762- 1780). He succeeded to the title of 4th Baronet Southwell of Castle Mattress in November 1766 and gained the title of 1st Viscount Southwell of Castle Mattress on 18 July 1776. He died on 29 August 1780 aged 59.
