Flag captured by the 15th (The King's) Hussars at the Battle of Omdurman, 2nd Sudan War, 1898
White cotton, badly stained, with straps of blue material. In the centre is a red panel bearing Arabic writing, translated as, 'God is great and gives greatness to his Servant and prophet Achmet the Mahdi'.
This flag was captured by the 15th Hussars on the battlefield at Omdurman on 2 September 1898. It is believed to be the standard of one of the lesser Emirs (leaders) of the Mahdist forces.
