Lord Curzon and Maharaja Scindia Madhavrao II Scindia, with tigers, 1911 (c)
Photograph, India, 1911 (c).
Lord Curzon was the Viceroy of India between 1898 and 1905. During his tenure of office and in the years that followed he regularly hunted alongside the British officials and Indian princes of the Raj. Some of the great 'Shikar' expeditions lasted for weeks and bagged thousands of birds and animals. By the early 20th century excessive hunting of the Bengal tiger had greatly reduced its population in India.
