South view of Lord Raglan's Headquarters, 1856
Photograph by James Robertson, Crimean War (1854-1856), 1856.
Lord Raglan moved his headquarters from Balaklava to this farmhouse at Khutor on the Chersonese uplands on 5 October 1854. Here he lived for the next nine months until his death. About two and a half kilometres from Sevastopol and seven from Balaklava, Raglan expressed satisfaction at finding 'a good house in the centre of the position, which is undoubtedly an immense advantage'.
