Ration biscuit, 1916
Soldiers were not fond of their hard biscuit rations, which had to be soaked before eating. However, a surprising number were kept as souvenirs. This example is inscribed in pencil, 'From Fred April 30/16 half of his breakfast'. The words were written by the mother of Bombardier Fred Kerr of the Royal Field Artillery, to whom the biscuit was issued during World War One (1914-1918).
