Captain William Munton Gunthorpe (1811-1858) was born in Antigua on 8 January 1811. He served as a captain with the 6th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry in the 1st China War (1839-1842). He rose to the rank of brevet major in 1854, but died of dysentery in Rangoon on 11 July 1858.
