Rifleman of the 4th Gurkha Regiment in marching order, 1890

Watercolour drawing by Alfred Crowdy Lovett (1862-1919), 1890. The figure was used in 'Types of the Bengal Army', published by 'The Graphic', on 8 March 1890.

This depicts Rifleman Chanda Singh Gurung wearing his campaign medals, a 2nd Afghan War Medal 1878-80 and a Kabul to Kandahar Star 1880. He is armed with a breechloading Snider-Enfield rifle.

The 4th Regiment regiment saw much service on both the North West and North East Frontiers of India.
