Martin-Leake won his first Victoria Cross in South Africa during the Boer War (1899-1902). After serving with the Imperial Yeomanry Martin-Leake joined the South African Constabulary as a surgeon. He received the Victoria Cross for his selfless actions assisting his comrades under fire on 8 February 1902 at Vlakfontein. Martin-Peake won his second Victoria Cross serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps on the Western Front in 1914.
