Major-General William Brett (1803-1858), in the uniform of a General Officer, 1857 (c)

Miniature portrait in watercolour on ivory, artist unknown, 1857 (c).

Miniature set in a glazed, oval mount of the same size, in modern green-covered card mount and frame.

William Brett served in the Bombay Artillery from 1820. He served in the Sind Reserve Force in 1838 and was the officer commanding the artillery at the taking of the Manora in Karachi in 1839. Brett also served at Akulkote in 1840. He married his cousin, Mary Brett in May 1833. Following her death from smallpox in 1838, he married Charlotte Egan in 1842. Brett retired in 1857 with the honorary rank of Major-General and died the following year.
