David Montolieu was a French Huguenot refugee who took service with the British crown. Shown here wearing a cuirass and with his right hand on a baton, Montolieu had fought for King William III in Flanders and at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. He later served with great distinction with Prince Eugene of Savoy in Italy during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1713), earning a patent of nobility as Baron of St Hippolyte from the Emperor Joseph.
