William Inglis (1823-1888), the son of the General Sir William Inglis who commanded the 57th (The West Middlesex) Regiment at Albuhera in 1811, was commissioned an ensign in his father's old regiment on 6 March 1840. Promoted captain in 1849, he served during the Crimean War (1854-1856) at Balaklava, Inkerman, the Assault on the Redan (18 June 1855) and in the expedition to Kinburn. While in the Crimea he received the brevet ranks of major (1854) and Lieutenant-Colonel (1855) and was later created a Companion of the Order of the Bath. He retired with the rank of general in 1882.
