Three Indian Army NCOs, 1897

In the Indian infantry the majority of native non-commissioned officers (NCOs) held the ranks of lance-naik, naik, havildar and havildar-major corresponding to the British ranks of lance-corporal, corporal, sergeant and sergeant-major. In the Indian cavalry the ranks were lance-dafadar, dafadar and kot dafadar.
