'Types of the Indian Army, illustrating the races enlisted in the Bengal, Punjab, Madras and Bombay Armies', 1897

Photograph by F Bremner, India, 1897.

Post-Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) recruitment to the Indian Army switched from high-caste Hindus from Bengal, Bihar and Oudh, to what the British called the 'martial races', particularly Rajputs, Sikhs, Gurkhas, Pathans, Garhwalis, Mohyals, Punjabi Muslims, Dogras, Jats and Baluchis.

From an album of 60 photographs taken by F Bremner, Quetta, June 1897.
