Studies for the oil painting, 'The flag: Albuhera, May 16, 1811'

The studies represent British soldiers of the 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) and Polish and French cavalrymen at the Battle of Albuera during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). The figure of the falling British soldier is clearly recognisable in the final oil painting as he is wounded defending the regiment's colour.

Wollen's oil painting of the Battle of Albuera was part of the Buffs Regimental Museum Collection and was gifted to the National Army Museum in 2001 (NAM. 2001-04-325).
