Studies for the oil painting, 'The flag: Albuhera, May 16, 1811'

Charcoal and wash sketches from a sketchbook by William Barns Wollen (1857-1936), 1911 (c).

The studies represent a British soldier of the 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) and attacking Polish and French cavalrymen at the Battle of Albuera during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). The figure of the casualty at the top of the sheet appears in the final painting in the foreground although his helmet is replaced by a shako.

Wollen's oil painting of the Battle of Albuera was part of the Buffs Regimental Museum Collection and was gifted to the National Army Museum in 2001 (NAM. 2001-04-325).
