The studies represent a fallen British soldier of the 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) and attacking Polish cavalrymen in French service at the Battle of Albuera during the Peninsular War (1808-1814).

Wollen's oil painting of the Battle of Albuera was part of the Buffs Regimental Museum Collection and was gifted to the National Army Museum in 2001 (NAM. 2001-04-325).
