Charcoal and wash sketches from a sketchbook by William Barns Wollen, 1917 (c).

The sketch is of a wounded Canadian infantrymen of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry defending the Frezenberg Ridge at the 2nd Battle of Ypres in 1915. In the finished oil painting he can just be seen in an entrenched position, behind an officwer and to the left of a soldier throwing a grenade.
