Martini-Henry .45 inch breechloading single shot rifle, Boer Forces, 1897 (c)
Inset silver shield on right side of the stock which is engraved, 'Siege of Mafeking - Taken from Boers on the capture of Commandant Eloff at Mafeking on May 12th 1901'. The side plate is inscribed: 'Made especially for ZAR'. 'ZAR' is the acronym of 'Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek', the Transvaal Republic.
Commandant Eloff, President Paul Kruger's grandson, was captured after a failed Boer attack on 12 May 1900, during the Siege of Mafeking.
